Makedo Exhibition June 29th 2007

“hey, this is Annemieke speaking,
This mysterious telephone guide you are using now, is my project for the makedo exhibition. I transformed this old telephone into an exhibition guide. It plays personal messages, recorded by the participants of this exhibition, and the one you're listening to now is mine. Also it's possible to make comments on the exhibited projects and play them back. This you can do for each participant individually, or you can also dial a number at random. So I hope you have fun with it, and please do leave some messages!
Thank you!
bye!”

I didn't actually take a photo of the phone I am using, so this is a link to a photo of the phone and its relatives... (I just typed PTT T65 in google and indeed found it!)

dismanteling the phone...

it has a very cool looking circuit again at the back!

maybe I can use the bell later, but it has to stay out of the box, because the arduino board is going in...

unsoldering the other components, so the cicuit board can be used for my circuit

everybody working, with Danja's background music

and then the soldering starts, I want to connect this all asap to the computer!!!

concept practical project

I want to use an old phone with a rotating system for dailing numbers to provide information about our upcoming exhibition. By storing soundfiles/recordings/voicemails about every project there on the computer and making it possible with the arduino board to dail these numbers with the phone, visitors of the exibition can use the phone as an information device. A second step would be to make it possible for visitors to leave a message also, and to have these messages stored in the project folders. I can ask the participants if I can record them talking about their project to use this as the sound files. After the exhibition I could give them the recorded feedback. And then there is the bell. If there is time left I could maybe see if I can let the bell take part of the project as well, to have it go off when nobody is neir the phone every 10 minutes maybe. I could try. But I'm taking one step at the time. I'll probably use python to program on the computer. Starting next week... Hopefully I can finish the (maybe first) soldering part next week so I can concentrate on the programming...

CONVERSTAIONS 26th of april: “control or no control”

5-10 min duo conversations with almost everyone after forcing yourself to write a quick idea on the card and explaining it to the conversation partner...

with Maria: will it be something you can control?
like press the button or...?
does it have something to do with your situation now?

with Danja: maybe you can change the coordinates of a computer mouse or a computer keyboard
an everyday thing where you are really used to, like for the keybord, change the settings for the buttons and give the user a quick assignment and have him/her use it and find out how you depend on it so much everyday...

with Sofian: change the meory of a phone, so instead of having nr1 calling your mom, have it call someone else for a change...

with Michael: ...and then it will explode...?

to do...

email before the 10th of may
essay draft: outline + literature and notes + 1000 words...

write protocol for prototype...
document the making off the prototype (record, photos, notes, sketches)...
phonemenu...?
(think of unexpected choices people make)

an object that adresses *that* feeling, desire or fear:

the Doorbell

feelings: paranoia, regulation, controlled

Who's at the door? Creating accounts for people who ring the doorbell... Different ones for people you know, one default for strangers...

(This comes from the annoying wireless doorbell I have at home. It goes off unasked, unexpectedly, even when no one is pressing it. So you never know if anyone's at the door or not.)

By assigning ways to press the doorbell to different people, you can take controll over the doorbell and know if it's someone familiar or a stranger or no one at all, at the door (or not).

This you can do at the entrance of a house or building, but also for rooms in a building. This last thing based on what was written on the paper: that you could try to monitor peoples positions in a building. And then Ricardo said something interesting about mapping who was at the door over a certain period of time...?
